INSCIENCE CONFERENCE
Ukraine Hosted the Largest Popular Science Conference During the War
INSCIENCE CONFERENCE 2023 was held on June 17-18 offline in Kyiv and online, featuring global and Ukrainian speakers. This event served as a reminder that even during a full-scale war, science remains important. Science contributes to victory, rebuilding the country, and acts as a powerful stimulus for the economy.
The popular science conference organized by INSCIENCE was the only event of this scale during the war. The focus of the 2023 conference was Science to Rebuild Ukraine. The program included lectures and workshops, as well as an exhibition of deep tech startups and inventions that have been globally recognized as innovations made in Ukraine. The event brought together more than a thousand people passionate about science and technology, including scientists, representatives of innovative businesses, government, media, teachers, students, and school students.
The Conference featured a series of confirmed speakers who covered a variety of topics. Omar Hatamleh, an innovation expert with 25 years of experience at NASA, discussed the future of artificial intelligence. Radiobiologist Olena Pareniuk, a researcher of Chornobyl and Fukushima, delivered a lecture on the unique aspects of the exclusion zone for space exploration. Arnaud Castagniet from Skeleton Technologies, a clean tech company, explained the benefits of high-power, fast-charging batteries in reducing CO2 emissions in Europe. Additionally, the guests learned about the restoration of the Black Sea after Russian aggression from a lecture by Mariia Pavlovska, a marine biologist who had participated in the Antarctic expedition to the Vernadsky Research Base.
Guests met 20+ participants of the exhibition, including Maksym Muzyka, CEO of UADynamics, the company that created the world’s cheapest Punisher drone, which is Ukrainian-made. Neuroscientist Sergiy Danylov presented Anima, a neurotechnology startup that helps diagnose mental health conditions in servicemen, rescuers, and civilians who have survived shelling.
Donations from the conference went to the Science4Kids popular science lecture series for children who had the opportunity to receive free Ukrainian-language content from scientists during the war. The INSCIENCE CONFERENCE was first held in 2018. Back then, speakers from NASA, the Mars Society, and the Copernicus Science Centre visited Kyiv to attend it.
